Typical Day
I arrive at the trading floor at 7:45 am and start the day by reading overnight market news and reviewing pending e-mails. I try to prioritize tasks accordingly so I can best plan for contingencies that may arise throughout the day. It is hard to have a predictable day as the nature of the trading floor is a fast-paced environment, and one which is in constant flux. I have found that time-management and multi-tasking are exceedingly valuable skills in this business.
The Structured Products Group structures and distributes Principal Protected Notes issued by the Bank of Nova Scotia to retail and institutional clients in Canada and abroad. I provide support to other members of my team as the point of contact for international brokers and colleagues in Latin America, providing them with new trade strategies and product support. I am also involved in the development of Structured Products for Canadian Investors and participate in the design of “pitches” (product presentations to brokers). I interact with our traders, marketers and back-office on a daily basis. Market research and quantitative analysis are usually part of my daily duties.
My Spanish background has been an invaluable asset when developing marketing materials for our clients outside of Canada, specifically in Mexico and Latin America, and has allowed me to develop important business relationships both locally and abroad.
