Question: How is Scotia Capital structured and what are the main business components?
Answer: Scotia Capital is designed to make our structure more client relationship-driven as well as help us leverage our product strengths and strengthen our industry positions. We have strong product specialists who play a critical role in delivering the best products and work with the relationship managers. Within the new structure, relationship management is focused on industry specialization. Working in teams, the professionals will be responsible for managing overall relationships and presenting comprehensive solutions to clients.

Question: What kind of salary and benefits can I expect to receive from Scotia Capital?
Answer: Scotia Capital offers a competitive salary and total compensation package commensurate with an individual's skills and experience.
Question: What are the hours like at Scotia Capital?
Answer: Hours worked vary depending on position and department. New employees should expect to work between 50 - 80 hours per week.
Question: How long does an individual remain in an entry-level position?
Answer:

Analysts in the Investment Banking and Mergers & Acquisitions areas remain in their position for a minimum of two years. After this time, they can pursue one of several options. Possibilities include remaining as an Analyst for an additional year, being promoted to the Associate level, moving to a different area within the firm, or pursuing a graduate degree.

Associates in the Investment Banking and Mergers & Acquisition areas start as Generalists and are expected to pick an industry specialization after 12-24 months on the job. Promotion to Associate Director level usually takes a minimum of 2-3 years.

Associates in Corporate Banking and Equity Research start specializing in a particular industry immediately upon joining. Promotion to Director level takes approximately 3-5 years, depending on individual performance and availability of opportunities.

New recruits in Sales and Trading spend their first year rotating through all areas of the division as Associates-in-Training. Upon completion of this year, trainees who are offered a full-time position will be promoted to the Associate level.

For all positions, career growth is directly related to an individual's ability, drive, and initiative.

Question: What kinds of education and training programs does Scotia Capital offer to its employees?
Answer:

Training for new recruits may begin with the Capital Ideas program. This is a classroom program designed to give new recruits a practical financial base, an understanding of our products and services, and an opportunity to network across all areas of the firm.

Additional training is provided to employees throughout their careers. Programs include presentation, negotiation and selling skills and relationship management workshops.

Scotia Capital also encourages employees to pursue graduate studies or a professional designation (such as a CFA) through employee programs such as the educational assistance program. (See Training)

Question: How does Scotia Capital encourage networking within the firm?
Answer: While Scotia Capital encourages its employees to work hard, it also recognizes the importance of having fun. As part of the Capital Ideas program, new recruits are encouraged to build relationships within many areas of the firm through a variety of activities. In addition to firm wide events each department hosts their own social activities throughout the year.
Question: Is it possible to transfer to different areas in Scotia Capital?
Answer: Internal transfers are possible after the completion of a minimum two-year period. Movement however, depends on matching business needs with an employee's knowledge, experience, skills and career development.
Question: Does a mentoring program exist within Scotia Capital?
Answer: Most Scotia Capital departments offer mentoring programs. New recruits are teamed-up with an experienced individual from their department who can offer advice and lend experience.

Question: What kind of educational background does Scotia Capital look for in its applicants?
Answer: The educational background of Scotia Capital employees varies greatly although generally an HBA, BComm, or MBA is preferred. Applications are encouraged from all degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate level. However, in all cases, applicants must possess a strong academic record as a demonstration of both their self-discipline and commitment to excellence. Other qualifications such as the CSC or CFA designations, while not prerequisites for employment, are definite assets.

Answer:

Question: What types of activities should I pursue to position myself for a job with Scotia Capital?
Answer: To help prepare you for a position at Scotia Capital you should graduate with a strong record of academic achievement. Leadership roles in extra-curricular activities are an advantage. You should also learn as much as you can about the industry through course work and industry publications. Students should also pursue summer employment in industry related fields.
Question: What opportunities does Scotia Capital offer students for summer employment? Do they hire co-op students?
Answer:

Each year there are a limited number of positions that become available for summer students within various departments of Scotia Capital including support areas for front-line operations. To apply for these positions, plase check with your school's career centre. See the "Summer & Co-op Recruitment" section for instructions.

There are also a few positions available for co-op students. Hiring for these positions is done throughout the year. Information regarding these positions will be posted at your school's career center.

Question: Do you have international opportunities for entry-level positions?
